Reasons Why Confederate Monuments Should be Removed

What are historical monuments; and should they be removed? Confederate historical monuments honor Confederate generals and soldiers during the Civil War, people who didn’t want to abolish slavery because they benefit from slave economy.   The most recent attempt at the removal of the statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee sparked an uproar from white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and members of the Ku Klux Klan in Charlottesville, Virginia. Lee was very cruel and degrading to his slaves, but he also served in the military prior to the civil war.  Is it right to remove his statues?

I say yes.

Lee’s statue, and other confederate monuments, honor those who support the institution of slavery.  It’s morally wrong to keep these statues standing, when they don’t, or at least shouldn’t, represent the values the United States upholds about slavery.  One argument made against the removal of historical monuments asks where it will stop at.  Many historic figures were racist, and slave owners, including George Washington.  Why not remove their statues? Well, here’s your answer: monuments such as Washington’s weren’t built to honor their defending of slavery, whereas the majority of Confederate monuments were built to honor their time dedicated to the Confederate army, which was established to protect the institution of slavery.  Statues such as Washington’s represent achievements to advance the United States.

Removing these historic monuments would not be like removing a piece of American history, because they can be transferred to a museum where they would be illustrating history, rather than honor.  The whole reason for removing the statues is to stop honoring historical figures who didn’t sustain United States values, not to completely erase their memory.  Taking down these monuments will allow us to be one step closer to combatting racism by not glorifying our country’s racist past.
