Cheerleaders win National Championship!

Our very own North Rockland Varsity Cheer team has been named National Champions at the NCA National Competition, held in Dallas, Texas on January 26 and 27. It was an amazing experience for the girls. The competition, Prestonwood Christian Academy, has won the championship for several years until North Rockland came through with a marginal win.

To prepare for the championship, the girls practiced everyday, perfecting the two minute and thirty second routine. It became very important to the girls this year to win this national title.

Three years ago, North Rockland won the national title with a Coed team in Dallas. Two years ago, the All Girls 2015-2016 NR Varsity Cheer team took the mat in Dallas, only to lose to Prestonwood Christian Academy by a fraction of a point. Last year, the girls did not compete in this championship. Having this win was like a comeback for the program altogether.

This year, North Rockland beat PCA by a fraction of a point, but nevertheless, it was an important victory. Winning was an out of body experience to the girls. The girls became extremely emotional and happy when they were announced. No one was sure of a win until awards were given; it seemed so close.

After the win, the girls were led to get their black leather national jackets. This jacket meant so much to the girls because it represented all the hard work that these cheerleaders put into this season. Stitched into the jacket is the quote “The work is worth it,” a phrase that is now commonly used by the team. They couldn’t wait to wear them to school and all over to show off their national title. Millions of pictures seemed to be taken after the win, many with the trophy which was almost as tall as the girls.

This win was truly an amazing experience for these girls and the five seniors who got to walk away with a jacket and the experience of being on this team. Leaving the program with this win is something that they will never forget. We will miss our five seniors: Victoria Caldiero, Camille Untener, Danielle Disclafani, Kylee Baum, and Kiara Clemente.

Unfortunately, the girls were not able to back it up with a New York State Championship.  North Rockland Varsity Cheerleaders were victors in their Section 1 competition, which led them to their bid for States in Syracuse on March 3, 2018.

This was the last competition of the season for the girls. They drove up to Syracuse, NY to compete with cheer teams from all over the state. In their first performance, they were in fourth place, and made it to the Finals. In the final round, the girls placed third. Two section 5 teams, Fairport  and Victor took the first and second place spots. Fairport, having placed second, beat North Rockland by .6 of a point. Victor, who took first, won over North Rockland by 2.7 points.

The girls, having no falls or deductions ran a perfect routine. This made them extremely proud of themselves, despite what the score sheets said.

Coming home from this competition was heartbreaking for a few seniors who will be leaving. Some to continue their cheer career in college, and others who will leave the mat for good.

Wrapping up this season is something the girls never deemed possible. It has been a long 7 month season for the team. Now it is time to rest and recharge for the upcoming season that will start in August! More updates will come next year!

Congratulations again to our 2018 National title winners! More updates will come again next season!
